Telemedicine Services for High-Risk Expectant Mothers
For more information about ANGELS, call the Baxter Regional Women &
Newborn Care Center at (870) 508-2300, or visit
www.angels.uams.edu.
The Antenatal and Neonatal Guidelines, Education and Learning System (ANGELS) is a cutting-edge consultation service that utilizes many different applications
of telemedicine, a 24-hour call center, and evidence-based guidelines
to deliver effective treatments to high-risk obstetric patients in Arkansas.
The teleconferencing equipment in the Baxter Regional Women & Newborn
Care Center links the patient in Mountain Home to the only board-certified,
maternal-fetal medicine specialists and genetic counselors in Arkansas,
located at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). In
real time, these specialists consult with the local physician during prenatal
and postnatal exams via telecommunication. This program allows patients
to access the expertise of OB specialists without having to make a trip
that can be costly and inconvenient, especially during later stages of
pregnancy.
The only service of its kind in the nation, ANGELS is a joint program of
the UAMS College of Medicine, the Arkansas Department of Human Services
and the Arkansas Medical Society. This unique program is designed to be
a support network for high-risk obstetric patients and practitioners in Arkansas.
