March Gladness

Baxter Health Foundation is celebrating March Gladness by raising $15,000 to purchase a bilirubinometer and light therapy blanket for the Baxter Health Women and Newborn Care Center.

Every year, there are about 700 babies born in the Baxter Health Women & Newborn Care Center, and of those, 16 to 20 percent have jaundice. Every baby is tested for jaundice after birth, which requires the baby to have blood drawn. If the baby has jaundice, they will need multiple blood draws to make sure they are improving after each phototherapy treatment session. On average, there are 1,300 blood draws every year on babies born at Baxter Health.

A bilirubinometer is able to detect jaundice levels without having to do a blood draw. Light therapy blankets help babies to heal quicker and go home sooner to the comfort of their own home with their family. These new items will help Baxter Health to continue to provide compassionate care for the youngest of patients.
