Breast Cancer Survivors Evening Support Group
Thursday, May 22 at 6:00 p.m.
Topic: Reconstruction Options
Speaker: Dr. Adam Newman of Newman, MD Plastic Surgery
Many women who have a mastectomy surgery to remove an entire breast to treat breast cancer have the option of having more surgery to rebuild the shape of the removed breast. Breast reconstruction surgery can be either immediate or delayed. With immediate reconstruction, a surgeon performs the first stage to rebuild the breast during the same operation as the mastectomy. A method called skin-sparing mastectomy may be used to save enough breast skin to cover the reconstruction. With delayed reconstruction, the surgeon performs the first stage to rebuild the breast after the chest has healed from the mastectomy and after the woman has completed adjuvant therapy.

There are many different types of breast reconstructive surgery options. Join us as Dr. Adam Newman discusses different options available in breast reconstruction for women who have had a mastectomy.

Both Breast Cancer Support Groups offer women with breast cancer a chance to share their experience with others who may be going through similar experiences. The sessions are for all women with breast cancer whether newly diagnosed or long-term survivor. The group covers various topics of interest such as different types of breast cancer and treatments, reconstruction and living beyond cancer.

Celebrating Life Support Group
Friday, May 16 at noon
Topic: Radiation Therapy
Speaker: Stephanie Osborne with CARTI
Radiation therapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses beams of intense energy to kill cancer cells. The term "radiation therapy" most often refers to external beam radiation therapy. During this type of radiation, the high-energy beams come from a machine outside of your body that aims the beams at a precise point on your body. Radiation therapy damages cells by destroying the genetic material that controls how cells grow and divide.

Please join us as Stephanie Osborne with CARTI discussed radiation therapy and its use in treatment of cancer.

The Celebrating Life Support Group is open to all men and women that have ever been diagnosed with cancer. All types of cancer are welcome. Discussion topics include different types of cancer, treatments, and survivorship. Whether they are sharing their experiences, hearing an educational speaker or having lunch together the members of this group enjoy fun and fellowship. Topics for programs are based upon input from the group and are designed to help celebrate life while coping with cancer.
