In these tough economic times, some people are struggling to find funds
to pay for medical tests that may help them stay healthier.
Baxter Regional Medical Center is addressing the problem with its annual
Health Fair Wednesday and Thursday.
This is the 32nd year BRMC has hosted the free event -- this year at Baxter
County Fairgrounds -- and thousands of area residents are expected to
come through the doors seeking information and health-care advice.
Nearly 80 health care-related booths will offer free screenings, medical
information and medical support group literature. Screenings are available
to fairgoers who are older than 18.
BRMC employees will draw blood for the cholesterol and blood-sugar screenings,
and the results will be mailed within a week. A 12-hour fast is recommended
for the most accurate results, but is not required for the test, according
to event organizers.
Fairgoers also can have their blood pressure tested as well as the prostate-specific
antigen (PSA) test for prostate cancer.
Other screenings and information include diabetes, carpal tunnel, clinical
nutrition, cardiopulmonary, heart team, cardiac rehab, inpatient rehabilitation,
grip-strength assessment, stroke, cardiac risk, home health and hospice
services, cancer, behavioral health and womenand#39;s health.
"The health fair is a way for Baxter Regional to encourage members
of our community to make healthy choices in their daily lives," said
BRMC marketing representative Donna K. McMullen. "So many illnesses,
such as heart disease and diabetes, can be improved with lifestyle changes.
We are hopeful -- through the one-on-one visits at the many different
booths -- that our employees can convey an important message.
"Preventive health care is our commitment to you, the people of the
Twin Lakes Area that we are proud to serve," McMullen said.
The Health Fair is open to people of all ages and will be held in conjunction
with KTLO/KCTTand#39;s 20th annual Senior Citizens' Expo.
Hours are 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday and 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday. All
BRMC screenings and consultations are free.
